Constructing butterfly sanctuaries to restore habitats

In an effort to support butterfly populations, PBS is creating mini-sanctuaries throughout Pakistan. Lepidopterists analyze local butterfly fauna, and horticulturists design habitats with appropriate nectaring and larval food plants.

Jhampir Butterfly Sanctuary

With help of local Palari community, our first butterfly sanctuary in Community Reserve Zone, Jhampir (Thatha district, Sindh province) is in making. Flagship species of this sanctuary is the Joker butterfly, a rarity and recent colonizer in Sindh province, highlighting our focus on its conservation.

OUTREACH

Pakistan Butterfly Society (PBS)

wants to inspire everyone to contribute to the protection of the local butterfly species, by educating people about our amazing rhopalocerous fauna and its connections with the ecosystem.

The primary objectives of PBS are research and education. Through scientific research, data collection, and knowledge spread, our team strives to increase the understanding of butterfly species and their habitats. Through educational programs, workshops, and butterfly walks, the society attempts to provide citizens with the knowledge and skills necessary to actively contribute to conservation efforts for butterflies.

To give Pakistan's butterflies local names, PBS is collaborating with linguists and butterfly specialists. In addition, we are spreading knowledge about the threats these butterflies face and the need of preserving their habitats by planting appropriate trees/plants, through social media campaigns and local events.

PBS issues a quarterly bulletin (newsletter) consisting of write ups written by PBS members. These write ups cover a variety of topics about Pakistani butterflies, including species insights, PBS events, butterfly-watching trip reports and certain articles highlighting precious information about our local species. First issue of PBSQB (Winter-24) is launching in mid-march 2024, which can be downloaded from upper-right corner of the home page of this website. Next issues will be released in June (Spring), September (Summer) and December (Autumn).
